The Los Angeles City Council announced Monday it will strip members Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León of their committee assignments after a racial scandal.

The controversy began on October 9 when an anonymous person posted a recording of an October 2021 council redistricting meeting to Reddit. In the recording, Cedillo, de León, then-President of the City Council Nury Martinez, and then-President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Ron Herrera made racist remarks; Martinez was mostly responsible for the comments, disparaging fellow councilor Mike Bonin as a “little bitch”, his adopted son, who is African-American, as “parece changuito” (like a monkey), Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón as “with the Blacks”, and Oaxacan community in Los Angeles as “little short dark people” who are “tan feos” (so ugly).

On October 10, Herrera resigned his post and Martinez resigned the council presidency, while remaining a member of the council. She resigned her seat on October 12 after facing pressure from residents of Los Angeles and US President Joe Biden.

Cedillo and de León have remained on the council despite calls for their resignations from President Biden and others.

In announcing the action, Acting President of the Council Mitch O’Farrell declared, “My mission and my duty is to help this city heal. The only recourse is resignation or recall.” The council cannot expel Cedillo and de León.
