Q. What are porcelain veneers and what type of dentist can do them?
A. The word veneer may remind you of Ikea furniture, but a porcelain veneer is by no means a piece of furniture! They are thin shells of ceramic that are specially crafted by a master ceramicist who works in coordination with a cosmetic dentist. The veneers are then placed onto the surface of your teeth with a strong dental adhesive. Porcelain veneers are the cosmetic secret of many celebrities with beautiful smiles. If you are looking to get porcelain veneers in NYC, be sure to choose a cosmetic dentist who can show you before and after photos of actual clients. If the before and after photos dont impress you, look for another dentist!
Q. What happens during a smile makeover consultation?
A. Cosmetic dentists begin by conducting a smile analysis or consultation to find out what you dont like about your current dental situation and what your expectations are for a smile makeover. Your cosmetic dentist will explain what procedures can be done to fix any cosmetic imbalances in your smile. Common problems experienced by smile makeover patients include discolored teeth, erosion of dental enamel, chipped teeth, misaligned teeth, decay, teeth that appear too big or too short, and gummy smile or excessive periodontal tissue covering the teeth. Porcelain veneers can help patients in each of these situations. If there is a gummy smile, gum recontouring may need to be done before getting porcelain veneers. Your dentist may want to make impressions of your mouth at your next appointment.
Q. What happens during the process of getting dental impressions?
A. The old method of doing dental impressions involved filling a metal or silicon tray with a thick goop, placing the tray in the patients mouth for several minutes, and then pulling the tray out. Its an unpleasant experience that causes some patients to gag, especially if they have a smaller mouth or sensitive gag reflex. Many dentists do not do dental impressions in this way anymore. Better technology allows cosmetic dentists to do digital impressions in this day and age, which are instant and more accurate than using a mold.
Q. Will the veneers match my other teeth?
A. The number of teeth getting dental veneers will make a huge difference in whether the veneers will look completely natural in your mouth. You may only see six of your upper teeth when your smile in a mirror, but other people can usually see 8 – 12 of your upper teeth when you smile, talk, or laugh. Some patients also show a lot of their bottom teeth when they talk or smile. For this reason, it is best to get porcelain veneers on as many teeth as possible for the best results. Cosmetic dentists in NYC are specially trained to be able to advise you on how many veneers to get, and the exact shade of white that is most appropriate for you. In general, the younger you are, the whiter your veneers should be.
Q. Will getting veneers hurt? How long does the procedure take?
A. When you go to your appointment to get your veneers, you will be given a local anesthetic so that you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the process. Many dentists also have TVs on the wall and/or ceiling, so you can relax during the procedure and watch TV. In order to prepare the surface of your teeth for the veneer, you may have part of the outside of your teeth removed. After this procedure, you will be given temporary veneers to wear while your actual ceramic veneers are being made by the ceramicist. This first procedure may take about an hour.
